Eyjafjörður (eye-yah-fee-or-ther) fjord is the longest fjord in Iceland at 60 km. Akureyri is positioned on the west side of the inland end of the fjord Eyjafjörður. In earlier times a few spits of land (Icelandic: eyri, thus Akur-eyri) jutted from the narrow coast .

Dawn sailing into Eyjafjörður

We were escorted in by an eight-legged horse!

Well, not exactly: but Sleipnir is Odin’s steed, and is the child of Loki and Svaðilfari (sfath-el-fari), is described as the best of all horses, and is sometimes ridden to the location of Hel.

Crossing the Arctic Circle

Situated only 100 km (62mi) from the Arctic Circle, Akureyri is known for some of the best summer weather in Iceland. The Jewel crossed the Arctic Circle on her way to Akureyri, and King Neptune made a visit to the captain and the ship!

The initiation involved an icecube down the back and a cold drink (and your nose getting painted blue!).

Farewell to Akureyri!
